Dhaka Abahani emerge group champions

Dhaka Abahani Limited emerged as group A champions to move quarterfinal of the Riviera Independence Cup Football when they came from behind beat Rahmatganj Muslim and Friends Society by 3-1 goals in their last group match held today at Birshreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium in the city’s Kamalapur.

With the day’s win, Abahani Limited secured six points from two matches while the old Dhaka outfit Rahmatganj yet to secure any points playing losing both their group matches playing the same number of outings. Swadhinata Krira Sangha finished as group runners-up to ensure quarterfinal spot with a victory over Rahmatganj.

In the proceeding, Brazilian forward Dorielton Gomes Nascimeto struck twice and Brazilian midfielder Raphael Augusto supported him with a lone goal for Abahani Limited. The match was locked 1-1 draw at the breather.

Rahmatganj took early lead in the match when Dhaka Abahani’s defender Tutul Hossain Badsha scored a suicidal goal in the 15th minute but their lead lasted for few minutes when forward Dorielton restored the parity for Abahani Limited in the 18th minute converting a spot kick.

After resumption, Dorielton gave Abahani Limited a deserving lead in the 51st minute while Raphael Augusto sealed the victory scoring the third goal for the traditional sky blue Dhanmondi outfit in the 70th minute of the match.

Abahani Limited clearly dominated the entire proceeding and notched their deserving victory while Rahmatganj were totally off-colored on the day.

Earlier, Abahani Limited got off to a winning start as they beat Swadhinata Krira Sangha by 2-1 goals while Rahmatganj Muslim and Friends Society lost to Swadhinata Krira Sangha by 2-3 goals, both their respective group opening matches.

Wednesday’s matches: Bangladesh Police Football Club vs Bangladesh Navy Football team (4 pm) and Bashundhara Kings vs Chittagong Abahani Limited (6 pm), both to be held at the same venue.
